Steroid Psychosis

Abstract

Steroid psychosis is a delirious or toxic psychosis due to Steroid and/or ACTH. It is well known that a variety of psychiatric symptoms appear after patients are started on steroids.
The author experienced a case of steroid psychosis who was a 23-year old femal and had taken more than 40mg/day of prednisolone for about 2 months because of her nephrotic syndrome. Psychiatric manifestation presented as spectrum psychosis with symptoms ranging from affective through schizophreniform to those toxic delirium. Haloperidol administered in a maximum daily dose of 9mg produced excellent response in a week.
The author¢¥s impression was that the physician should pay attention for the recognition of early signs and symptoms of steroid psychosis and take a preventive measures, whenever using high doses of steroids for a long time, with this case report and brief overview o steroid psychosis.
